German Chocolate Brownies

  • 1 box brownie mix
  • 3 large egg whites
  • 2 cups sweetened flaked coconut
  • 1 cup pecans, toasted and chopped
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt


Preheat oven to 350. Grease 13x9 pan. Prepare brownie mix according to package directions. Spread batter evenly in prepared pan. Bake brownie 20 minutes. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, whisk together egg whites until foamy. Stir in coconut, pecans, sugar, salt, and both extracts. Spoon topping over hot brownie and spread evenly. Return brownie to oven and bake until toothpick inserted 2 inches from edge comes out almost clean, 20 minutes longer. Cool completely in pan on wire rack. When cool, cut lengthwise into 4 strips and then each strip crosswise into 6 pieces.
